Whole-Home Flooring Replacement in Vaughan

Replacing tired floors from foyer to upper bedrooms while addressing subfloor issues and seasonal concerns

Whole-Home Flooring Replacement in Vaughan
  1. 1

    Careful demolition and waste handling

We removed old flooring in phases, starting with the main-level living areas to allow the family to use other spaces. Vinyl and laminate were lifted, carpet and pad were pulled, and the existing hardwood was selectively removed where cupping made it unsalvageable. All waste was sorted and hauled to authorized York Region disposal facilities according to local guidelines.

  2. 2

    Subfloor inspection and remediation

We scanned for level, fastener integrity and moisture content using calibrated moisture meters and a straightedge. Where plywood was delaminated or joists showed bounce, we sistered joists and installed new 18 mm tongue-and-groove plywood panels to create a flat, stiff substrate meeting current floor flatness criteria for engineered hardwood and LVP.

  3. 3

    Moisture control and underlay selection

For main-level areas and the kitchen we installed a 6-mil polyethylene vapour barrier over concrete-slab transition areas and used a cork underlay in living areas for sound control. In bathrooms and mudroom entries we applied a cementitious self-levelling underlayment over substrate repairs to ensure a waterproof, flat base suitable for porcelain tile or waterproof LVP.

  4. 4

Installing durable engineered oak and waterproof LVP

We selected 9–12 mm engineered oak with a 3–4 mm wear layer for living and bedroom spaces for stability through Vaughan’s humid summers and cold, dry winters. In the kitchen and mudroom we installed 5–6 mm rigid-core waterproof luxury vinyl plank (WPC) with a high abrasion rating to resist salt and grit. Planks were acclimatised on-site and installed with manufacturer-approved adhesives or float techniques per guidelines.

  5. 5

    Finishing, trim, and final QA

Transitions, T-mouldings and resurgence of the stair nosing were custom-cut to match the new floors. We left movement gaps at perimeters and provided end-of-job documentation: moisture readings, product data sheets, care instructions and warranty registration info. A final walkthrough with the homeowners covered seasonal maintenance tips specific to Vaughan’s climate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a whole-home flooring project like this usually take?

For a two-storey, 2,000–3,000 sq ft family home we typically plan for phased work over one to three weeks, depending on demolition needs and subfloor repairs. Acclimation periods for engineered wood or adhesives can add a day or two, and we schedule around the family’s key needs to limit disruption.

How disruptive is the work — can we stay in the house?

Most families stay in the home. We coordinate daily zones, use dust-control measures, and keep essential pathways open. For larger demolition days we recommend temporary sleeping arrangements for light sleepers or pets, but full relocation is rarely necessary.

When should homeowners consider a whole-home replacement rather than patching?

Whole-home replacement makes sense when multiple floor systems are failing, when mismatched materials affect resale or when there are subfloor issues that require consistent remediation. A single cohesive specification reduces future problems tied to seasonal humidity and temperature swings common in Vaughan and the America/Toronto timezone.

Will new floors handle Vaughan winters and nearby salt use?

Yes — choosing engineered products with proper underlay and sealed transitions, plus waterproof LVP in entryways, mitigates freeze-thaw and salt concerns. We also recommend a regular maintenance routine and protective mats at exterior doors to limit grit wear.
