Remove finishes and assess structure
We began by stripping out the vinyl flooring, baseboards and lower drywall to expose the subfloor and stud cavities. This let us inspect joists, rim joist insulation and the sill plate for rot or termite damage; any suspect wood was replaced with pressure-treated lumber and properly fastened to code.

Improve ventilation and mechanicals
We rerouted the dryer vent to a much shorter, straight run using rigid 4" aluminum ducting and an exterior hood with back-draft damper to reduce lint accumulation and improve dryer efficiency. A dedicated inline exhaust fan tied into a humidity sensor improved air changes, and we upgraded the electrical to add a dedicated 120/240 V dryer circuit if required by the appliance.

Subfloor and moisture management
After removing damaged subfloor sections we installed 3/4" CDX plywood with construction adhesive and ring-shank screws to prevent squeaks. We added a peel-and-stick asphaltic membrane at the doorway threshold and installed a 6-mil polyethylene vapour barrier under the new engineered hardwood transition and porcelain tile in damp zones for extra protection.

Durable finishes and built-in storage
For mudroom flooring we selected a matte porcelain tile with a R10 slip rating and a CTE-compatible thinset to handle temperature swings. Millwork included shaker-style maple cabinets with waterproof plywood boxes and adjustable shelving; benchtops were a laminate with 45-degree edge for impact resistance, and coat hooks were installed on a backer board fastened to studs.

Insulation, heating and final touches
We insulated the garage-side wall with mineral wool batt to improve thermal separation, and added a programmable in-floor electric mat in the mudroom entry (where code and existing construction allowed) to help melt tracked snow. LED task lighting, a removable boot tray and moisture-resistant paint completed the family-ready finish.
